The Alto Bernesga Biosphere Reserve presents the RES-MAB project at the III Spanish Congress of Biosphere Reserves

The Alto Bernesga Biosphere Reserve participated in the 3rd Spanish Congress of Biosphere Reserves, held from September 21 to 24, 2026, in Herrera del Duque (Badajoz), within the La Siberia Biosphere Reserve.

The Congress brings together representatives from Spain’s 55 Biosphere Reserves, along with the Management Council, the Scientific Council, the Spanish Committee of the MaB Programme, and various administrations and entities linked to conservation and sustainable development. One of the main objectives of this edition is to advance the Strategic Action Plan of the Spanish Network of Biosphere Reserves 2026-2035, which will define the Network’s work for the next decade.

On Tuesday, September 22nd, the presentation “RES-MAB: An International Project Focusing on the Local” was given, showcasing the experience of the Alto Bernesga Biosphere Reserve within this collaborative project involving seven Mediterranean biosphere reserves and three other partners.

During the presentation, it was explained how RES-MAB connects international cooperation with concrete actions in the territory, highlighting the capacity of biosphere reserves to develop solutions tailored to their local context. In the Alto Bernesga BR, the project is enabling work in areas such as the recovery and enhancement of the Mantequera Leonesa, research into new uses of local propolis as a food preservative, training and capacity building for strategic stakeholders, and the integration of gender equality into the management of biosphere reserves.

Furthermore, to complete the presentation of the project at the national level, a poster was created highlighting the most important information to date.

The presence in La Siberia BR has provided a new opportunity to share experiences, learn about projects developed in other reserves and strengthen cooperation within the Spanish Network, showing how joint work can translate into concrete initiatives to improve the sustainability and opportunities of rural territories.
