Major Agreement Signed for the Mantequera Leonesa Cow
The Alto Bernesga Biosphere Reserve and the Association for the Recovery of the Leonese Butter Factory Sign an Agreement to Promote Rural Development Through a Local Fattening System
León – November 26, 2024
The Alto Bernesga Biosphere Reserve and the Association for the Recovery of the Mantequera Leonesa (ARMALE) have signed a collaboration agreement to launch an innovative project focused on developing a local fattening system in the province of León. This initiative, part of the European RES-MAB project, seeks to offer viable alternatives adapted to the local context, with the aim of strengthening the livestock sector and fostering a balance between rural development and environmental conservation.
The first session, which included expert staff from both entities, as well as from the University of León, took place on November 26 at the La Pola de Gordón Town Hall at 12:00 PM. During the event, the project’s progress and objectives were presented, along with the opportunities this collaboration offers for local livestock farmers.
The RES-MAB project, supported by the European Union through the PRIMA Programme, is designed to implement solutions to climate change in seven biosphere reserves in the Mediterranean. The Alto Bernesga Biosphere Reserve, as a beneficiary of the project, seeks to transform its territory into a «living laboratory,» applying the WEFE (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems) nexus approach to foster the resilience of local communities.
